Health and Family Welfare Minister, Tamil Nadu, Thiru M. Subramanian inaugurates a new oxygen plant commissioned by HCCB for the Poonamallee Taluk

Nemam, Jan 20, 2022 – Thiru M. Subramanian, Minster of Health and Family Welfare, Tamil Nadu, today inaugurated a new oxygen plant commissioned by Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) at the Institute of Public Health (IPH), Poonamallee. The plant, dedicated to the Poonamallee Health Unit District (Poonamallee HUD), was handed over to the Deputy Director, Poonamallee Health Unit and is provided for by Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) as a part of its COVID Care project in Tamil Nadu. Other dignitaries present at the event included Shri. S. M. Nasar, Minister for Milk & Dairy Development, Tamil Nadu; Dr. T. S. Selvavinayagam, Director of Public Health; Dr. Alby John Varghese, District Collector, Thiruvallur District; Shri. K. Jayakumar, MP – Thiruvallur; Shri. A. Krishnaswamy, MLA, Poonamallee Constituency; Dr. Senthil Kumar, Deputy Director, Public Health & Preventive Medicine; Shri Selvam, Tahsildar, Poonamallee, and Shri. G. Balasubramanian, Block Development Officer, Poonamallee and Mr. S. Sridhar, Factory Manager, HCCB, Nemam.

The Institute of Public Health (IPH) – Poonamallee, is the center point of the Poonamallee Taluk. The oxygen plant at the institute will serve 28 village panchayats, spread across 400 Sq. Kms, with a population of around 7.7 Lakh people. The facility will also provide oxygen cylinders to 13 government hospitals in the entire Taluk. The plant has a proposed capacity of 50 Litres Per Minute (or) on an average 10, D-type 40-liter cylinders a day, with the purity of oxygen at 93 %.

Highlighting the need to proactively work towards battling the 3rd wave of COVID-19, Kamlesh Sharma, Chief Public Affairs and Communication Officer, HCCB said “As a responsible corporate citizen, we feel it’s our duty to contribute towards the nation’s fight against the pandemic. The commissioning of the oxygen plant follows our earlier efforts of launching an Emergency Health Response vehicle in Poonamallee, the inauguration of water ATM for providing safe drinking water and bolstering the health infrastructure at Nemam. Together, these initiatives have helped us in being better prepared for the 3rd wave. HCCB is thankful to the Hon’ble Minister for his time, effort, encouragement and guidance in helping commission this oxygen plant.”

HCCB has been actively working with local administrators to set up oxygen plants across the country such as in Patna (Bihar), Guntur (Andhra Pradesh), Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Kheda (Gujarat) and Ramanagara (Karnataka). The company has already spent Rs. 6 crores in providing healthcare support, food, beverages, and ration in combating the second wave of covid.

In Tamil Nadu, HCCB has been working with the District Administration, Health Department, Revenue Department, Police, Government & Private Hospitals in the area to provide support in various forms. The company has been actively distributing beverages for the hydration of police, health workers, and govt officials – the frontline COVID Warriors. It has also recently set up a Blood Bank Refrigerator (BBR) for Tiruvallur Government Hospital (GH) which caters to the health needs of the entire district.

Additionally, HCCB has taken country wide initiatives to provide essential medical equipment such as ICU beds, modular beds, blood banks, PPE Kits, oximeters, thermal scanners, stethoscopes, BP apparatus, gloves face masks, essential beverages for hydration to government hospitals, front-line workers and various vulnerable communities.
