Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB), one of India’s top FMCG companies, has been conferred with the prestigious Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) Excellence Award, presented by Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM) for its factory at Atmakuru near Vijayawada. The Atmakuru factory of HCCB thus becomes one of the 31 companies outside Japan to win the recognition in the category A of the award list.

Globally regarded as the father of TPM, the JIPM’s TPM award is a testimony to HCCB’s commitment to improving the quality of its products by preventing equipment break-downs, improving the quality of the equipment and standardising the equipment for its Atmakuru factory. Starting its TPM journey in 2015, the factory followed and implemented the TPM framework with a view to improve productivity to achieve zero losses and reinforce production foundations.

As a result, the factory’s system line efficiency has improved by 11% during 2014 to 2019. Similarly, the factory’s quality, safety and environment parameter has recorded a significant growth while its water usage ratio continues to show steady improvement.

Reflecting on the significance of the award, Mr. Dinesh Jadhav, Executive Director, Supply-Chain, HCCB, said, “We are absolutely delighted to get the honour, which is a gold standard in total productive maintenance at the global level. The team has worked very diligently to implement, internalise and institutionalise the overall framework of TPM, which has paid huge dividends to us in terms of higher productivity at minimal losses. I am sure the recognition will further inspire the team to spur yet another leap in our performance. This factory joins two of other factories in Pirangut near Pune and Ameenpur near Hyderabad to have received such a coveted award.”

Conducted in two stages, the assessment for the TPM award is carried out by a team of experts from JIPM. The assessment is essentially aimed at evaluating the factory’s policies, practices and performances around the 8 pillars of TPM technique. These pillars are Autonomous Maintenance, Focused Improvement, Planned Maintenance, Quality Management, Equipment Management, Education and Training, Administrative & Office TPM and Safety Health Environmental Conditions.

Enumerating the overall benefits of implementing TPM at the Atmakuru factory, Mr. B Rajashekhar Reddy, the Factory Manager, explained, “Implementation of TPM has brought about an overall improvement in our working culture with a clear focus on maintaining and improving the integrity of production, safety and quality systems including the morale of our colleagues. Among other things, we are proud to say that our factory today meets more than 74% of its energy requirements through green sources of energy such as solar power and other energy-efficient technology.”

The award will be presented at Kyoto in Japan on 18 March 2020.
